Page 1 of 2 Blue sky and the sun is shining. Could it be better to do a photocall? No.
It started with some flying action. Landing and departing Tornados from a point close to the runway. After that we were moved on to the Z-line (apron). Three Tornados and a surprise waited for the photographers. There was one Tornado in grey color scheme (44+50), one in camouflage (45+85) and the 43+96 which received a stunning color scheme for the Tiger Meet 2003 that was taking place earlier that year. The surprise was a F-16AM (FA-93) of the Belgian Air Force which had a tiger motif applied to its tail.
The history of the AufklärungsGeschwader 51"I" began when on July 1st 1992 a small group started the build up of a Tornado wing in Schleswig/Jagel. During that time the disbandment of the MFG1 (MarineFliegerGeschwader) was still not finished. The AG51 received the name Immelmann to continue the tradition of the disbanded recce unit like the AG51 in Bremgarten. The AG51"I" was officially established January 1st 1994 and is therefore the youngest wing in the German Air Force. The panther in the wing badge was taken over from the badge of the AG52 in Leck. Together with the Jagdbombergeschwader 32 the AG51"I" made up the EG1 (Einsatzgeschwader) in Piacenza/Italy and took part in combat missions over the Balkan..
