The Open Day was started with a ceremony by the wing at 10.30. A small monument to honor the killed navy service men was presented and it was mentioned that this would be most likely the last open day at Valkenburg.
The defense budget has been decreased and it was decided to sell all 13 P-3C CUP Orion to Germany (8) and Portugal (5). But till the last aircraft has left the airbase a lot of work a lot of work has to be done.
At January 1st the wing was released from its official duties (e.g. reconnaissance flights over the North Sea etc.) and two weeks later 320th and 321st squadron were disbanded. Until mid 2006 German Navy service men and women convert from the Atlantic to the Orion. It?s not yet known if the airfield will be kept open after that.
The weather wasn?t very bright but there was still a small program on the schedule. Till 18.00 it was possible to visit the static display on the apron and in some hangars and some entertainment with music and food was presented. Additionally the fire brigade gave a demonstration of its capabilities and it was possible to explore the history of the airbase.
Round about 25.000 visitors including 3.000 veterans attended the event and said good-bye to ?their? airfield.
