The history of the Jagdgeschwader 74 (Fighter Wing 74) began May 05th 1961 on the new build airbase Neuburg/Zell at the Donau and it still is the home of the JG74. In 1962 the wing has been integrated into NATO structure. May 12th 1964 the first F-104G destined for the wing landed in Neuburg that continued operations with the F-86K until the introduction of the Starfighter was completed in 1966.
The Phantom era started at September 26th 1974. The first F-4F were transferred from Wittmund to Neuburg and was completed two years later.
2006 the wing is supposed to receive the first Eurofighters. The instruction of the first pilots has already begun in Laage with the JG73"S". The mechanics learn their lessons at the technical school of the air force in Kaufbeuren. The wing will continue to fly the mighty phantom till 2007 but on a smaller scale while a lot of construction work is taking place to adapt the infrastructure to the needs of the new jet.
The photocall was a chance to not just capture the German Phantoms but also some Turkish ones that flew several missions together with their German counterparts.
