In der zivilen Luftfahrt besteht ein Kennzeichen (Registration) aus einem Prefix gefolgt von einem Trennstrich und einer Zahlen- und/oder Buchstabenkombination. Wobei der Trennstrich nicht überall Anwendung findet. Anhand des Prefixes kann man erkennen in welchem Land das Flugzeug zugelassen wurde. Jedes Land verfügt über einen (manchmal mehrere) bestimmten Prefix. Die militärischen Kennungen sind ein Kapitel für sich.
